Filipina American to be Highest-Ranking AAPI in Biden Administration

President Joe Biden will nominate Filipina American Nani Coloretti to serve as deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget, ABC 7 reports. Shalanda Young will serve as director of the OMB.

Coloretti is likely to be the highest-ranking Asian American in the Biden administration, CNN reports. During the first 100 days of his administration, Asian American lawmakers criticized Biden for not cultivating a diverse cabinet.

The Senate will need to vote to confirm Coloretti before she can accept her role.

Coloretti is a graduate of the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley, ABC 7 reports. She served as a policy adviser and budget director for Gavin Newsom during his time as mayor of San Francisco.

“Today, it’s my honor to nominate two extraordinary history-making women to lead the Office of Management and Budget,” Biden said in a video announcement.

Asian American political groups are pleased with Biden’s decision to nominate Coloretti.

“We are thrilled that after months of advocacy, we have a highly qualified team to run OMB. Nani Coloretti will be the highest-ranking ever Filipino American in any administration and we are pleased President Biden is living up to his commitment to diversity and talent. We still await the opportunity to see an AAPI in the President’s Cabinet as has been the case since 2000,” Shekar Narasimhan, the founder and chairman of the AAPI Victory Fund, told CNN.
