Concerned citizens gathered Sunday night outside a New York hospital where beating victim Qui-Ying Ma remains in critical condition.
According to New York State Senator John C Liu, Ma is in a coma after a man beat her with a rock as she swept the street.
Police arrested Elisaul Perez,33, for the beating. Those in the neighborhood say he sleeps in the street and has been known for an occasional outburst.
“He have a lot of problems. We have a lot of people around here. He’s screaming a lot,” one resident said to CBS NY.
The vigil Sunday night last seven hours. Organizers say Ma is now reacting to touch and sound and believe “their positive energy has made an impact.”
A landlord said Ma, 62, doesn’t even live in his building but was sweeping outside his apartment building just to help out.
“She’s a very simple and very honest and very kind-ful person. You can show her picture from her eye. You know that,” landlord Yihung Hsieh added.
The New York Police Department’s Hate Crime Task Force is investigating the case, but no hate crime charges have been filed.
Perez faces charges of assault and possession of a weapon.
A Go Fund Me campaign to pay for her medical care has so far raised more than $66,000.
