High turnover among key staff in the office of Vice President Kamala Harris is being blamed on burnout and fear among staffers that they will become too closely associated with Harris, reports Axios.
Her chief spokesperson, Symome Sanders, announced last week she would be leaving just weeks after communications director Ashley Etienne resigned.
Staffers tell Axios that some of this should be expected following a high-stress first year. Harris herself says “I love Symone… I can’t wait to see what she will do next.”
Politico reports that Harris is being urged by some top Democrats to openly hit the reset button, while others say that will send out bad signals that her office is in disarray.
“Every opportunity that you get in politics to renew and repurpose is a good opportunity,” Democratic strategist Donna Brazile said in Politico. “In every stage of [Harris’] life, there were people she could bring with her and then there were people that she had to pick up along the way because of the new responsibilities. And I think that this is an opportunity like she’s done with throughout her career to find people who are able to take their seats at the table because guess what? There’s something new on the menu.”
