The NYPD held a press conference to discuss the data it had collected on hate crimes in the city from the beginning of 2021 to December 5. Overall, hate crimes across the city increased by 100 percent, NBC New York reports.

Police say 129 incidents of hate against Asians were reported this year. Only 28 incidents were reported last year, CBS News reports.

There were 503 reported incidents of hate this year. NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig told CBS News they’ve made 249 arrests in connection with those incidents.

The NYPD has created a hate crimes task force to investigate hate crimes. New Yorkers are also coming up with their own ways of protecting their communities.

Over 1800 New Yorkers volunteered to walk people home in Chinatown, PIX 11 reports. One woman raised over $100,000 to pay for Uber rides to take Asian Americans home, PEOPLE Magazine reports.
