Students playing in the schoolyard at Haines Elementary School in Chicago’s Chinatown ran for cover when they heard 13 shots ring out during recess.
Fox News spoke to one student who told it students ran for cover while screaming and crying.
“I was actually at recess, I was by the gate of the shooting, and my teacher told me her dad got shot,” Malyaiya White, a 4th-grade student, said to Fox News.
Police identified the victim as 71-year old William Tse who News Nation USA reports was out getting the newspaper when a gunman shot him execution-style.
“This offender gets out of the vehicle, walks up to the sidewalk, stands over Mr. Tse, and then immediately fires several rounds into his body, causing his death,” said chief of detectives Brendan Deenihan.
Alfonso Jordan, 23, faces a charge of first degree murder.
The Post Millennial reports police caught up with Jordan when officers spotted the car on the expressway and gave chase before he crashed his vehicle and officers arrested him.
Authorities credit its Chinatown Community Watch program for providing information leading to Jordan’s whereabouts, according to News Nation.
“How do you go to school and protect your kids,” said parent Wayne Chan.
“I mean, when this happened, kids were having recess outside.
