NYC Mayor-Elect Appoints Two Asian American Deputy Mayors

CATEGORIES

New York City mayor-elect Eric Adams has appointed two Asian American women as deputy mayor, NBC New York reports.

Adams is the first mayor to appoint two deputy mayors of Asian descent, ABC 7 New York reports. He appointed six deputy mayors, five of whom are women.

Meera Joshi and Maria Torres-Springer are the two Asian American deputy mayors. Joshi will serve as deputy mayor for Operations, and Torres-Spring will serve as deputy mayor for Economic and Workforce Development, NBC New York reports.

All six deputy mayors, including Joshi and Torres-Springer, have worked in local city government. Joshi is a former Taxi and Limousine commissioner. Torres-Springer previously served as Small Business Services commissioner.

Adams wanted his deputy mayors to reflect the diversity of New York City.

“For us to ensure that this city recovers quickly while addressing the inequalities that plagued us well before COVID-19 struck, we must have top leadership that can both deliver for New Yorkers and is representative of New Yorkers,” Adams said, according to ABC 7 New York. “Representation matters. Perspective matters. My administration will understand the people of the city it serves – and each of the people I am appointing today has the experience and skills to help us turn this city around the right way.”
