1,000 march in Chicago Chinatown to protest the rise in crime

More than 1,000 people marched through the streets of Chicago Chinatown two weeks after the execution-style murder of 71-year-old Woom Sing Tse.

WGN9 reports they marched in silence to bring attention to their message not with their voice, but with their presence. Businesses in the area closed from 2-4 in support of the demonstration.

“We cannot see more tragedies like that we saw on a 71-year-old grandfather,” said Alderman Byron Sigcho-Lopez to ABC7.

Chicago Police say crime in Chinatown is up 55 percent this year.

“Everyone is heartbroken in the community,” one demonstrator said to CBS2. “We want to put as a model; an example to call out everyone’s actions to keep our community safe.”

A gunman shot Tsee 22 times in front of the school his daughter teaches at. The gunshots sent kids in the schoolyard running back into the school for cover.

Illinois News Today reports 23-year-old Alfonso Joiner faces one charge of murder.
