Video surfaces in attack on 2 Asian seniors in Oakland

Still from Surveillance video

ABC7 has obtained video of a violent assault on an elderly Asian American couple in Oakland’s Chinatown Christmas weekend that authorities hope will lead to the suspects.

The two had just left a jewelry show when the video captures them being followed by a gunman.

You can see the man drawing his gun and grabbing the woman’s purse. The couple falls to the ground after apparently being pushed. The suspect runs off with the purse and into a getaway car.

“Fortunately we got bruised but have no broken bones or anything serious. Mentally we are really scared,” the male victim told reporter Dion Lim.

Carl Chan, president of the Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce who himself has been assaulted in Chinatown, called for more camera and license plate readers in the area.

Last year, volunteers began patrolling the area and volunteering to escort seniors as crimes against the elderly began to rise. Chan says crime had actually dropped right before the holidays.
