Murdered sheriff recruit’s sister calls him her best friend

David Nguyen’s sister tearfully recalls the moment deputies told her the sheriff recruit had been shot and killed as he drove on the freeway in Oakland.

“I got home, they just told me straight. Your brother David Nguyen has passed. I thought it was a joke. I really thought it was a joke. If you know my brother he is a survivor. He would find a way to make it,” she said to ABC7.

She then went to the hospital.

“I saw his body in the bag. They put a flag on him. I saw a couple trickles of blood on the floor and that’s when I knew they really did try and do everything they could to try and bring him back.”

A gunman in a passing car killed the Alameda County Sheriff recruit on Tuesday near the toll plaza of the Bay Bridge. It happened just weeks before his scheduled February graduation from the training academy.

KRON reports the Alameda County Deputy Sheriff’s Association announced a $10,000 reward Thursday for information leading to an arrest of Nguyen’s killer.

Nguyen was driving in his private vehicle and at this time, investigators have not determined a motive for his killing.

“He represents a community that is underserved as far as demographics go within our agency,” said sheriff’s spokesman J.D. Nelson to the East Bay Times. “He’s Vietnamese, the son of immigrants. Anytime you can get good people who can help not just us or any law enforcement agency, you can continue to break down the cultural barriers that may exist.”
