Madison Chock/Evan Bates win rhythm dance round at Nationals

CORRECTION

The team of Madison Chock and Evan Bates won the rhythm dance U.S. Figure Skating round in Nashville, TN Friday.

The rhythm dance is the first part of the ice dance competition. We incorrectly reported they had won the championship Friday not understanding that the rhythm dance is the new name for what used to be called the short dance. We apologize for our error.

The pair danced to Billy Ellish, reports NBC, and set a national record of 91.94 points. They edged out rivals Madison Hubbell/Zachary Donohue who also skated spectacularly.

“It is certainly not our first rodeo, but it’s our favorite rodeo,” Chock said, reported Click on Detroit. “Our routine is locked and loaded.”

Chock and Bates previously won the national championship in 2015 and 2020. They have competed in the two previous winter Olympics but have never medaled there.

“Oh boy, they came to win,” said commentator Tanith White about their performance. “Madison’s eyes cast a spell on everyone in this arena.”

Chock is of Chinese-Hawaiian descent on her mother’s side and European on her father’s side. She was born in Redondo Beach, CA.
