Attack on Sikh cab driver in NY in suspected hate crime

A video posted on Twitter shows a man punching a Sikh cab driver who appears to retreat in an effort to diffuse the situation.

The incident happened at John F Kennedy Airport in New York and was posted on Twitter earlier this week.

According to the India Times, Navjot Pal Kaur uploaded the video but says someone else shot it. Kaur shared it with Simran Jeet Singh who posted it on Twitter.

The Daily India reports the suspect used expletives and knocked the victim’s turban off.

“For those who aren’t Sikh, I can’t put into words what it means to have your turban knocked off — or to see someone else’s turban knocked off. It’s visceral and gut-wrenching and just so disheartening to witness,” Singh said on Twitter.

Singh is an author and director of the Inclusive America Project at the Aspen Institute.

The National Sikh Campaign is among those who have reacted to the video.

“We know this story too well. A Sikh person goes about their daily lives only to be senselessly attacked by someone. Common road rage between people can escalate when someone who is ignorant of who we are takes their disdain for our turbans and becomes violent,” the Sikh Campaign said to NRI Affairs.
