News of Damage from Tonga Volcano Eruption Emerging

At least three people are dead and 100 homes destroyed after Saturday’s eruption of the Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha’apai volcano, USA today reports.

New satellite photos show that the volcanic eruption has left much of Tonga covered in ash.

Phone and internet lines were also destroyed during the eruption, making it difficult to assess the extent of the damage, NBC News reports.

A British woman, a 60-year-old man and a 49-year-old woman have died. Local officials fear the death toll may rise as water supplies have been damaged.

Many Tongan Americans have expressed concern for their families.

International organizations are prepared to help, but the heavy ash has made it difficult for international aid to assist Tonga.
