Arrest records released by police in Watertown, CT reveal they believe a teacher left her kids alone in the basement while she went on vacation in Florida with her boyfriend.
WFSB reports Kerry Lyn Caviasca faces two counts of risk of injury to a child and two counts of second-degree reckless endangerment.
According to the arrest warrant, text messages found on her kid’s phones showed the children were told to “just eat candy” when they asked what they should eat for dinner.
Both children are under the age of 12, according to Fox61. Investigators say they were alone for two days and nights.
Caviasca’s ex-husband alerted police to his suspicions when he could not locate his children. He told authorities the children denied being left alone, but he did not believe them.
When confronted by police Caviasca denied the allegation and said she had left the children with her brother. Authorities arrested her on Saturday, January 15.
The school district released the following statement:
“Waterbury Public Schools has been informed of a pending allegation regarding a Waterbury Public School staff member. The alleged actions do not represent the values of our district. The teacher has been placed on leave while the District conducts an investigation.”
Caviasca’s attorney said he would have no comment.
