The Delaware state representative who used an anti-Asian slur in an email has been arrested for shoplifting, ABC 6 reports.
On Tuesday, Newark police issued a warrant for former Rep. Gerald Brady’s arrest on two counts of shoplifting. Just last week, Brady resigned from office.
In June 2021, Brady was discussing an email an advocate had sent him. The advocate had wanted to make Brady aware of research that suggested decriminalizing strip clubs and prostitution could lower sex crime rates, WDEL reports.
“Is the dude basically saying, if we provide free (sex acts) for Uncle Pervie there will be few rapes and few (a slur for Chinese women) will be shipped in CONEX containers to the Port of Wilmington??” Brady said in an email to a private citizen.
Brady had been emailing from his government email address when he used the slur.

After the emailed comments were revealed, many called for Brady’s resignation. Late last week, the representative resigned.
He did not cite the use of an anti-Asian slur as the reason for his resignation. Instead, he said he had been recently diagnosed with PTSD from his time in the military, WDEL reports. The Delaware House of Representatives, who announced his resignation, did not disclose that he was under criminal investigation.
Victor Battaglia Jr., Brady’s attorney, said it would be “premature” to comment on his arrest.
The former representative is accused of stealing less than 200 dollars worth of merchandise. He is scheduled to be arraigned in March.
