Could Lunar New Year become a federal holiday?

Congresswoman Grace Meng (D-NY) wants to make Lunar New Year a federal holiday.

The representative from New York introduced a bill to do just that.

“The time has come to make this happen. My bill, coupled with my resolution, would demonstrate that the holiday celebrated by millions is also valued by their government,” Meng said to ABC30.

If passed and signed by President Biden, the day would add a 12th recognized holiday for federal workers. Individual companies, cities and states would have the option to do the same.

According to NPR, some school districts already give their students the day off on Lunar New Year.

This week marks the beginning of the Year of the Tiger which symbolizes courage bravery, and strength.

The Asian community has remained strong throughout the pandemic, standing up to a rise in anti-Asian hate encouraged by politicians who have made Asians the scapegoat for the coronavirus.
