40,000 Sign Petition Demanding Police Investigation into Death of Gay Asian Man

Over 40,000 people have signed a petition demanding the San Francisco Police Department re-open the investigation into the death of a gay Asian man, ABC 7 San Francisco reports.

On March 1, 2020, 20-year-old Jaxon Sales left his home to go on a blind date. Around 11 p.m., his parents sent him a text asking if he was going to come home for the night, Advocate reports. Sales never came home.

He was found dead the next day in a San Francisco apartment. According to Advocate, the medical examiner ruled that his death was an accident. He died of acute mixed drug intoxication. GHB, cocaine, and methamphetamine were found in his system.

GHB is also known as a “date rape drug.” Sales’ parents Jim Sales and Angie Aquino-Sales say that the officials dismissed the significance of GHB being found inside their son’s system because he was gay.

“Jaxon is Asian, he is gay,” his mother told ABC 7 San Francisco. “When I heard the medical examiner say (the drug) GHB…and the gay community uses GHB… it was very dismissive.”

SFPD released a statement to ABC 7 San Francisco saying there were no signs of foul play, but Sales’ friends and family members want more answers. They have launched a petition on Change.org demanding that police re-open the investigation.

The petition outlines questions Sales’ family still has about the case. It has received over 40,000 signatures.
