A 61-year old woman who went into a coma after savagely being beaten with a rock has emerged out of her coma after two months.
WABC reports that the family of Guiying Ma is calling this latest development a miracle.
Her beating inspired angry friends and concerned citizens to hold vigil outside her hospital to send her prayers and positive thoughts.
“In the very beginning, she was sleeping. I called her name. She responded to me,” her husband Zanxin Gao said to WABC. “I asked her to move your hand. She moved her hand. Move your leg. She moved her leg.”
As AsAmNews previously reported, Ma was sweeping outside her landlord’s building just to be helpful when attacked.
“When she saw me working in the backyard she cooked dumplings or noodles without asking me and would come and bring it to me for lunch,” her landlord Yihung Hsieh said to the Daily News. “She told me she wanted to help me sweep the sidewalk. I feel pretty bad, this incident happened because she was helping me.”
Prosecutors charged Elisaul Perez with assault. He entered a not guilty plea, and is next due in court in April.
Gao hopes he is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Hsieh says the last two months have been aggravating for Gao.
“In his mind he’s always thinking his wife might not understand him and may not be able to talk, like a vegetable, and that maybe she’d be in a coma for a long time,” Hsieh said. “He was very worried about how to take care of her.”
