Teen Wolf star Arden Cho pulls out of upcoming movie over alleged pay dispute

Teen Wolf star Arden Cho has declined to appear in Paramount+’s upcoming Teen Wolf sequel movie after allegedly being offered half the salary of White co-stars, Deadline reports.

According to IMDb, supernatural drama Teen Wolf ran for 6 seasons between 2011-2017, amassing a massive fanbase. Cho’s character, the part-kitsune Kira Yukimura, was introduced in season 3 and became a regular during seasons 4 and 5. However, Yukimura was abruptly written out of season 6, leading to shock and controversy within the fanbase.

Cho was the only non-white actress among the four recurring core female characters, Deadline reports. Fans were outraged by the alleged pay disparity, which implied that she was being compensated lower than Crystal Reed, who played deceased character, Allison Argent, on the show.

Neither Cho nor Paramount has explicitly confirmed Deadline’s allegations, which were attributed to anonymous industry sources. However, fans observed that Teen Wolf cast member Dylan O’Brien, who also refused to appear in the film, appeared to be supporting Cho.

On Twitter, Phil Yu (@angryasianman) quote retweeted the Deadline article posted on the account Film Updates with the caption “Arden said ‘nah.’” Particular attention was drawn to the tweet by fans and sites such as Koreaboo and Da Mixx after O’Brien liked it.

The like led some fans to speculate that O’Brien’s refusal to appear in the sequel film was due to Cho’s alleged unequal treatment. Twitter user Hannah (@hhannahperkins) replied to Yu’s tweet, writing “the fact that Dylan liked this tweet just proves it’s true.” User monSHdez agreed, replying: “And maybe that’s the reason he didn’t want to come back for the movie and it’s fair.”

Later, Twitter user K (@kamisgolden) tweeted “Dylan O Brien supporting Arden Cho. I love him so much!,” apparently referencing O’Brien’s earlier liked tweet. In response, Cho tweeted: “He’s a good one,” appearing to confirm that speculation.

In response to Cho’s tweets, fellow actors and fans alike posted messages supporting and praising the actress, as well as condemning the alleged racism that occurred. Former Teen Wolf actress Meagan Tandy, who appeared in the show as supporting character Braeden during seasons 3-5, replied to a Tweet by Cho saying “Sending you a BIIIIIIIGGGGGG hug. I’m proud of you,” followed by a line of heart emojis.

Fans, too, expressed their love for the actress. “We love you so much. I’m sorry those mfs dared to screw you over,” wrote user @focusonkm. @ImWithAlaska posted that Cho was “absolutely right to pass their offer,” adding “How insane to think they’re still doing this in 2022…” @DeceitWriter also posted, writing: “Damn right. You deserve better than that disrespect. Though, I wish more would have stood by you.”

Meanwhile, user @ninareels observed that Cho was the “only actress of color ever billed as a series regular and also dropped without notice.” She added: “how can you call that anything but racism.”

Though Cho has yet to officially comment on the situation, she appeared to express her appreciation of the outpouring of support on Twitter. In a Tweet posted the day after the Deadline article was published, she simply wrote: “Love you, wish I could give you all hugs.”
