Prosecutors charged a 12-year-old boy Wednesday in the fatal beating of a 70-year old Asian man during a carjacking, reports ABC6.
Police in Philadelphia arrested the boy on February 3, just weeks after the arrest of 18-year-old John Nusslein, reports Philly Voice. A third suspect who remains outstanding is just 16 years old.
70-year-old Chung Yan Chin spent several weeks with head trauma in the hospital after the December 2 beating before dying on December 23.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reports the youngest suspect is due in court next week and Nusslein’s next court appearance is set for April. Attorneys for both suspects declined to comment.
Prosecutors say the suspects approached Chin and knocked him to the ground. They then punched and kicked him in the face before stealing his Toyota Camry.
The city has experienced a surge in crime this year, including 800 carjackings in 2021. That’s double the amount from 2020. Police investigated 562 homicides in Philadelphia last year.
