Jury deliberations begin in Tou Thao trial for George Floyd death

CATEGORIES

Jurors began deliberating Wednesday in the trial of three former Minneapolis police officers, including Tou Thao, charged with violating the civil rights of George Floyd during his death, CNN reports.

Floyd died after former officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on his neck while arresting him. Thao, J. Alexander Kueng and Thomas Lane are charged with depriving Floyd of his right to medical care during the incident, PBS reports. Thao and and Kueng are also charged with failing to intervene as Chauvin kneeled on Floyd.

All three officers testified during the trial. During his testimony and questioning, Thao claimed he did not realize there was anything wrong with Floyd until a firefighter attempted to perform life-saving measures on him.

Later, when Assistant U.S. Attorney LeeAnn Bell cross-examined Thao, he admitted that Floyd appeared unconscious at the scene.

Thao’s attorney Robert Paul objected to the idea that Thao “willfully” failed to intervene. He said that a person acts willfully when they act with bad intentions. However, Bell pointed out that not acting when they had the opportunity shows willfulness.

“They had opportunity and means to (help) and didn’t … Disregarding that is willfulness,” she said, according to CNN.
