A Pakistani American received a death sentence Thursday for raping and beheading his girlfriend in Islamabad, reports FirstPost.
Prosecutors successfully convicted Zahir Jaffer, 30, for the attack on Noor Mukadam. Mukadam (pictured in the tweet below) is the daughter of a former Pakistani diplomat. Jaffer is described as a son of a tycoon.
Mukadam’s father applauded the verdict.
“This case is for all the daughters of Pakistan,” he told CNN. “The society and media came to our side, the entire nation and the world was on our side.”
CNN reports that Pakistan does not have a law banning domestic violence. It’s estimated that 28% of women at least 15 years of age in Pakistan suffer domestic violence.
Mukadam’s death has sparked calls for a new domestic violence law in the country.
The Guardian reports authorities suspect Jaffer attacked Mukadam after she rejected his marriage proposal.
A guard and gardener working for Jafer received ten-year sentences for abetting the murder.
