Asian Americans have criticized “The Batman” for a scene depicting an attempted attack on an Asian Man, NBC News reports.
In the scene, a group of men follow an Asian man off the subway. As they are about to attack the man, Batman swoops in. He beats up the attackers, telling them he is “vengeance.”
Jeff Yang, a columnist for CNN, said the scene was triggering. Yang and other Asian Americans pointed out that the scene could be uncomfortable for Asian Americans given the rise in anti-Asian attacks throughout the country.
Others pointed out that the scene was really the only form of Asian representation in the movie.
“The Batman” is not the only critically acclaimed film over the past few months to be criticized for its depiction of Asians. “Licorice Pizza” has been criticized by Asian American media groups including a character that is racist to his Japanese wife.
