Three men were charged in connection to the murder of a security guard and former police officer Kevin Nishita.
Shadihia Mitchell, Hershel Kiante Hale, and Laron Gilbert, were charged with murder, attempted robbery and assault, according to the prosecutors form the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office. KTVU reports that the three suspects have had varying degrees of prior offenses.
Although Hale and Mitchell are in custody, Gilbert is not and is currently being located, according to the NBC Bay Area.
Nishita was fatally shot on Nov. 24 while he was protecting a San Francisco Bay Area television news crew, NBC News reported. He died three days later.
Police officials said that the three suspects related to Nishita’s death could have possible ties to a San Francisco gang, according to KTVU.
Nishita previously worked as a police officer in Hayward, San Jose, and Colma. He then worked for Star Protection Agency, which sends guards to protect news crews in the region, NBC News reported.
“Nothing brings back your loved one, but people can feel some sense of justice with these arrests,” Oakland police Chief LeRonne Armstrong said.
