Surgeon shot and rushed to his own hospital after attempted carjacking

Doctors treated a surgeon from John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore after a carjacker shot him, reports the Baltimore Sun.

Police say Dr. Madhu Subramanian, 38, had been on his way to work Friday when the incident occurred.

“I was frankly numb and in disbelief,” fellow trauma surgeon Joseph Sakran said about treating a co-worker. “As a survivor of gun violence and a trauma surgeon at John Hopkins, I’ve seen this public health crisis from numerous vantage points. Despite my own experience, nothing prepares you when the person you have to take care of is one of your own,” Sakran tweeted.

According to the Sun, a stray bullet struck and nearly killed Sakran in high school.

John Hopkins confirmed Subramanian was not seriously injured and has been released from the hospital.

Fox45 reports this is the latest in a surge of carjackings. Friday’s incident marks the 167th carjacking so far this year in Baltimore, an increase of 67 percent over the same period last year.

“Unfortunately, our community, like so many others around the city, has experienced a troubling increase in crime in recent weeks that affects us all,” the university wrote in a letter to employees signed by Dr. Paul Rothman, CEO of Johns Hopkins Medicine, and Kevin Sowers, president of Johns Hopkins Health System. “News like this is understandably upsetting and can provoke fear and anxiety. We encourage you to lean on available mental, emotional and spiritual resources.”

The shooting occurred near Baltimore City College High School right before the start of classes.

“There were students and lots of people out,” said Councilwoman Odette Ramos to the Sun.

Police have not released a description of the suspect or details of the incident.
