Rep. Doris Matsui led the House of Representatives in a moment of silence Monday to mourn the six people who were killed during a shooting in Sacramento early Sunday morning.
Rep. Matsui represents California’s sixth congressional district, which covers the city of Sacramento and its surrounding suburbs. She said she was “heartbroken” when she heard about the shooting.
“Our Sacramento community is hurting,” she said during her speech before the moment of silence. “This tragedy has touched every single one of us, and I really deeply appreciate the support for the lives lost from all of you and across the nation.”
The Congresswoman also called for action.
“We cannot go on accepting that shootings like this are inevitable,” Matsui wrote in a tweet. “If we can prevent even one more tragedy like this and spare other families and communities from feeling this pain — then we have to come together and act.”
