Chicago man robbed and beaten. Left in a coma

A Chicago man is in a coma after being beaten, robbed, and left for dead, reports ABC7.

The family of 61-year-old Jin Yut Lew say the suspects left their father unrecognizable.

“He already had multiple brain surgeries. They had to do a craniotomy to decompress the brain because of brain bleeding,” said Dr. Kim Tee, the spokesperson for the family.

NBC Chicago reports his family had been searching for him for days. Police say street cleaners found Lew after the beating on April 6, but authorities could not identify him.

Finally, a worker noticed Lew matched the description posted on social media by his family and made the connection.

“Taking personal property is one thing, but now they are being progressively more violent toward victims,” Lew’s family said in a statement to NBC. “This needs to stop. City leaders need to do something about it and find and punish those responsible.”

A Go Fund Me page set up by the family has so far raised more than $50,000.

The family says the perpetrators beat their father in the head with a blunt object. Doctors say Lew may be left with permanent brain damage.

He immigrated from China in the early 80s. He is described as a respected head chef who is well known in the Chicago Chinese community. His family fears he will never work again.

“We just need to pray hard that Mr. Lew will wake up and speak to us about what happened,” Tee said.
