William & Beverly Ong convicted of harassing Muslim neighbors

A couple both in their 70’s has been convicted of making anti-Muslim threats and harassing their neighbor for three years, reports NJ.com.

A jury found William Ong, 76, and Beverly Ong, 73, guilty of bias intimidation and are scheduled to be sentenced in June. The same jury cleared the husband of making terroristic threats.

Hudson County is one of the most diverse communities in the country and there is no place for hate or discrimination here, or anywhere,” Suarez said to the Daily Voice. “The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is committed to prosecuting anyone responsible for bias crimes to the fullest extent of the law.”

The Council of American-Islamic Relations of New Jersey cheered the jury’s decision.

“We welcome guilty verdicts for the perpetrators of this disturbing, hateful crime, and we’re thankful that they were convicted before they could carry out their threats,” said CAIR-NJ Executive Director Selaedin Maksut said in a statement. “Communities in New Jersey and nationwide must come together and reject anti-Muslim bigotry and other forms of hate.”

This isn’t the first time the Ong family has been tied to harassment.

Beverly Ong and her daughter were convicted of harassing and damaging the property of an Iranian neighbor in 2012.
