Navy veteran and captain Hung Cao won the Republican primary in Virginia Saturday to compete in the general election to represent the 10th Congressional District, Loundoun Now reports.
Cao won with 52.8% of the vote, ahead of Prince William County Supervisor Jeanine Lawson who finished second and Brandon Michon third.
“I’m honored to have earned the Republican nomination. Last year, Virginians sent a clear message when they elected Governor Youngkin to lead our state in Richmond, and now, we are ready to send another message by electing a common-sense conservative outsider to represent this district in Washington,” Cao stated to Loundoun Now.
WUSA9 reports Cao is a political newcomer who will take on two-time incumbent Democrat Jennifer Wexton in November.
According to NBC Washington, Cao is a refugee from Vietnam and graduated from the Naval Academy in Annapolis. He fought in Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia. He came out on top over 10 other candidates.
“We came to this country with nothing… we harnessed all the opportunities this country gave us, and we didn’t take any handouts. That resonates with all the people in this district, especially all the immigrants and minorities,” Cao said in a statement sent to AsAmNews.
The incumbent Wexton has a huge advantage in fundraising right now. Ballotpedia reports has $3 million in cash on hand as of March 31 compared to $221,000 for Cao.
The recently redrawn 10th Congressional District leans Democrat, but Republicans believe they can be competitive there.
