South Asian and Muslim Fans Excited about Debut of ‘Ms. Marvel’

South Asian and Muslim fans are falling in love with “Ms. Marvel,” the latest television show in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The show follows superhero fan Kamala (Iman Vellani) who is struggling to fit in at home and at school. Everything changes for her when she gets her own superhero powers.

The first episode debuted today, June 8, and fans are already expressing their love for the show. South Asian and Muslim Marvel fans are excited to see their culture represented in a Marvel tv show.

“As a Muslim marvel fan, the first episode of ms marvel made my day,” one fan tweeted.

A Twitter user named Aamir praised the show for inspiring South Asian kids.”

“Absolutely love #msmarvel and I love it even more for what it’ll do for the South Asian kids. Seeing a South Asian woman lead is incredible, the music, the nuances in bits of the language used. I cannot believe it and I am so damn happy,” Aamir wrote in his tweet.

Neha Chitnis said on Twitter that “for once” she felt “represented on the big screen.”

Saloni Gajjar, a staff writer for The AV Club, said she was excited to see Muslim and South Asian critics write about the show. Sarah Shaffi, a freelance writer whose work has appeared in publications like The Guardian, will be recapping the show for the AV Club. Filmmaker and television writer Siddhant Adlakha will be recapping the series for Vulture.

Several South Asian and Muslim writers, producers and actors have helped create the series. The series was created by Bisha K. Ali and directed by Meera Menon. Ali helped write the series alongside Sana Amanat.

  1. The majority of Muslims ARE Asians. Indonesia has the world’s largest Muslim population. You CAN be both Asian & Muslim. Islam is a religion not a race/ethnicity!
