Director of Ms. Marvel responds to review bombing

The racists came out and attacked Kelly Marie Tran when she first debuted as Rose Tico in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Now they’re back again, this time leaving bad reviews on IMDB for the latest entry into the Marvel Universe, Ms. Marvel on Disney+, reported NBC.

Director Adil El Arbi who headed the project with co-director Bilall Fallah told Gizmodo “I think fandom values are a reflection of society, you know, so you got to have the good and the bad.”

The fan reviews on IMDB vary widely from the reviews left by critics and enthusiastic fans who praised the show’s storyline as well as its diversity in casting. Critics on Rotten Tomatoes have given Ms. Marvel an overall rating of 97%. It also received a fan rating of 85%. On IMDB, fan ratings have been in the mid 60% range.

Ms. Marvel features the first Pakistani American superhero at MCU and the first Muslim. It stars Iman Vellani.

According to NBC, most of the bad reviews on IMDB are coming from men over the age of 30.

“The superhero universe for the longest time has been patriarchal,” said Harleen Singh, an associate professor of women’s studies and South Asian history at Brandeis University. “So it’s not surprising to me that this criticism is coming from that demographic because in a way, that demographic is the all-consuming group of the superhero universe for comic books and all the kind of narratives and stories that the superhero universe represents.”

El Arbi prefers to look at the bright side of the fandom.

“I think that we tend to focus just on the positive aspects of it, because the love and the care that they give,” he said to Gizmodo. “You will not have that in any other job and it’s a real pleasure. We hope that our humble contribution to the MCU will please the fandom everywhere in the world, especially the younger fandom.”
