Roopali Desai Nominated to 9th Circuit Appeals Court

President Joe Biden announced Wednesday that he has nominated Roopali Desai to fill a vacancy at the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Desai earned her bachelor’s, master’s and law degrees from the University of Arizona. According to a White House press release, she is a partner at Coppersmith Brockelman where she has practiced since 2007. She has represented the Democratic Party and Democrats on a number of important issues in Arizona, The Arizona Republic reports.

Desai also served as legal counsel and campaign attorney for U.S. Sen. Kyrsten Sinema. According to The Arizona Republic, Sinema advocated for Desai’s nomination.

“I have known Roopali for over 10 years. In that time, I have seen her deep respect and understanding of the law up close. She is a trusted legal expert highly regarded across the political spectrum in Arizona, known for her integrity and fairness,” Sinema said in a statement to The Arizona Republic.

The Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus has pushed Biden to consider more diverse candidates. They are pleased with Desai’s nomination.

“I was excited to learn of Roopali Desai’s nomination to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. From her early work with survivors of
domestic and family violence to, most recently, fighting back against election misinformation and false claims concerning the 2020
the presidential election in Arizona, she has shown tremendous resiliency, dedication and compassion,” Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA) said in a statement on behalf of CAPAC.

“I also want to applaud President Biden for continuing to act on his promise of nominating highly qualified and diverse candidates. Ms. Desai’s nomination marks a significant step forward in further diversifying the bench – and upon her confirmation, she will become the first South Asian American to serve on the Ninth Circuit as an appellate judge.”
