Student assaulted amidst concern about anti-Asian hate

A group of men assaulted an Asian student on one of the busiest streets near the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

The Daily Cardinal citing a post on Reddit reports the men surrounded a Ph.D. student from Hunan Province, China and then began punching him in the face, pulling him to the ground and then kicking him.

The attack left him bleeding from the left ear.

The report incited much concern from those who feel the university hasn’t done enough to stop these attacks.

The University says it knows of the incident and pledged that campus police would work with the Madison Police Department to investigate.

According to NBC15, the university described itself as “deeply concerned” after receiving more reports of violence against Asian, Pacific Islander and Desi American communities.

“UW–Madison is committed to making our campus and nearby downtown areas safe for all,” the statement read.

In the latest attack, the victim recalls seeing three men attack him, but witnesses say there were as many as five, the Daily Cardinal reported.

Others commenting on the Reddit thread talked about their own experiences with violence around campus.

  1. I have heard that in the San Francisco Bay area, many Asians are arming themselves to defend against such attacks.
