Rising political star Bee Nguyen has won the Democratic nomination for Secretary of State in Georgia.
The Georgia state representative beat out former state Rep. Dee Dawkins-Haigler for the nomination on Tuesday, The New York Times reports. The pair advanced to the June run-offs after they both failed to secure the majority required to win the May 24 primary outright.
Several prominent national and state political figures, like Stacey Abrahams, endorsed Nguyen, CNN reports. She will now face GOP incumbent Brad Raffensperger in November’s election.
Nguyen, 40, is the first Vietnamese American to serve in the Georgia state assembly, NBC News. If she wins, she would become the first Asian American woman elected to a statewide political position in Georgia.
