Portland police are investigating an attack on a man and his five-year-old daughter as an anti-Asian bias crime.

Around 3:45 p.m. on Saturday, July 2, a man approached a father and his five-year-old daughter at the Eastbank Esplanade near the Hawthorne Bridge in Portland. The father and daughter are from California.

The suspect made comments about what he thought was their Japanese descent, The Oregonian reports. He then began punching the 36-year-old father in the head and repeatedly punching the girl in her bike helmet, KOIN 5 reports.

Witnesses intervened to stop the attack and the man was arrested.

Police have identified the suspect as 34-year-old Dylan J. Kesterson. According to a press release, Kesterson was booked into Multnomah County Detention Center on charges of Bias Crime in the First Degree and Bias Crime in the Second Degree.
