Another racist incident reported at University of Wisconsin

An Illinois man faces disorderly conduct charges and a possible hate crime enhancement after police say he screamed slurs at an Asian American worker at the University of Wisconsin.

NBC 15 reports it happened July 4th when the man is accused of yelling slurs from his vehicle on Lakeshore Path near Lot 60.

Campus police then say the man got out of his car and confronted the victim who managed to run away.

UW Madison Police located the driver and the suspect’s vehicle the next day and are recommending hate crime charges.

“Incidents prompted by hatred targeting the Asian-American community are increasing nationwide and must be addressed appropriately by law enforcement authorities,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper in a statement sent to AsAmNews. “We support the call for a hate crime enhancement in this case, which would send the message that anti-Asian hate will not be tolerated in our society.”

This is the latest in a series of anti-Asian hate incidents at the University of Wisconsin.

Last month, an attack on a Chinese PhD student prompted protests by hundreds of people.

In January, security ejected a fan from a UW basketball game after he directed the slant-eye gesture toward Asian students.

In March 2020, police investigated a rash of anti-Asian graffiti pointing blame at the Chinese for the spread of the coronavirus.
