Japanese Breakfast cancels show in protest of far right wing group

Grammy nominated Japanese Breakfast announced its canceling its show in Rochester, NY after it learned the venue had also booked appearances by extreme right wing conspiracy theorist, reported Stereogum.

The group lead by Korean American Michelle Zauner made its announcement after learning of a boycott of Main Street Armory after it booked the “Reawaken America” tour.

The event features numerous speakers who push lies that President Biden stole the 2020 election from Trump and oppose measures meant to protect the country from the spread of COVID-19.

According to the Brooklyn Vegan, multiple Rochester leaders had called for the Reawaken American Tour to be cancelled.

“We don’t want it here. We don’t want it in the City of Rochester. We don’t want it in the county of Monroe. We don’t want it in the State of New York,” said Monroe County Legislator Mercedes Vazquez Simmons to WROC.

As with anything in politics these days, the decision by Japanese Breakfast to support the boycott generated controversy.

“This is a line of people who demand everyone think like they do or be cancelled. Ironically the only thing cancelled was people who think like they do. 1984 is not a how to book,” wrote one critic.

However, an overwhelming majority of comments left on Twitter supported Japanese Breakfast’ decision.

“I plan to buy your album as a result of this principled position,” said one.

“Total support and respect this!” said another.

Japanese Breakfast received Grammy nominations this year for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Music Album.
