A 42-year-old man is due back in a New York courtroom August 2 to be arraigned on hate crime charges after police in Yonkers say he punched a Filipina woman 125 times, reports CNN.
Surveillance video shows a man brutally attacking a woman as he hits her continuously even after she falls to the ground.
NBC New York reports the victim suffered brain bleeding, numerous facial fractures, along with bruises and lacerations to her face.
The Philippine Consulate in New York says its recorded 26 attacks on Filipinos in the area in the last year.
“Many of us are fearful of going out,” said Lisa Do Hofflich of the Westchester County Asian American Democrats as her voice shook. “What we do. We look over our shoulders and we look askance at people we pass on the street.”
According to Patch, the Westchester County Grand Jury indicted Esco for attempted murder in the second degree, attempted murder in the second degree as a hate crime, assault in the first degree, assault in the first degree as a hate crime, three counts of assault in the second degree and three counts of assault in the second degree as a hate crime.
Esco is being held without bail.
A coalition of Asian American groups called on the state to fund $64 million in education and programs to prevent hate crimes like this.
Yvette Crespo says she saw the attack as it happened.
“I started knocking on the door, and when I did that it caught his attention, and that’s when he got off of her,”she said. “He went out that door, went to the corner, put his hands up.”
