Emma Raducanu will play Serena Williams in the first round of the Cincinnati Masters tomorrow.
Raducanu is currently 10th overall in the women’s tennis tour, while Williams is unranked. The 19-year-old Wimbledon winner has struggled in a few of her past competitive matches. She made it to the quarter-finals of the Citi Open in early August but lost in the round of 64 at the Canadian Open on August 9.
Williams made it to the round of 32 in the Canadian Open. Last week, she announced that the upcoming U.S. Open would be her last competitive tournament. At just 40-years-old, she has 23 Grand Slam Singles titles.
In an essay published by Vogue, the champion said she wants to focus on growing her family. Her four-year-old daughter Olympia wants to be a big sister.
“I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me. A few years ago I quietly started Serena Ventures, a venture capital firm. Soon after that, I started a family. I want to grow that family,” she wrote in her essay.

Raducanu feels honored to have been able to play Williams. She is not sure how the match will go but is looking forward to sharing the court with Williams.
“Expectations, I don’t really know, I don’t really care. I just want to go out there and, one, enjoy the match that I’m going to play whenever I do play it. It’s a great gift to play the best on her way out from the sport. So I’m just looking forward to that,” Raducanu told The Guardian.
