Emma Raducanu defeats Serena Williams, calls match “an honor”

Emma Raducanu defeated Serena Williams during their round of 64 match at the Cincinnati Masters.

The 19-year-old Wimbledon champion beat the 23-time Grand Slam Winner in two sets: 6-4, 6-0.

According to The New York Times, Williams and Raducanu played in front of a sold-out crowd Tuesday night at the center court. The match lasted a total of 65 minutes.

Raducanu was full of praise for the champion.

“We all should honor Serena and her amazing career,” Raducanu said after her victory, according to ESPN. “I’m so grateful for the experience to have been able to play her and for our careers to have crossed over. Everything she’s achieved is so inspirational. It was a true honor to share the court with her.”

Williams received a standing ovation moments after losing. According to The Guardian, she left the court quickly and quietly without doing press.
