A 60-year-old Asian woman in Oakland, California, was fatally shot during an attempted robbery Sunday afternoon.
According to KRON 4, the shooting happened just after 2 p.m. in the Little Saigon neighborhood, near Lake Merritt near 5th Avenue and East 11th Street. The victim is Lili Xu, a dentist who lived and practiced in Oakland.
Surveillance video footage obtained by KPIX 5 shows the suspect waiting in their white Sedan on 5th Ave near E 11th St before the victim arrives. When Xu arrives in her dark blue Mercedes Benz sedan, the suspect pulls up next to her.
The suspect gets out of their vehicle and approaches Xu’s passenger seat. According to KPIX 5, the suspect apparently demanded Xu hand over her purse. When she refused, the suspect shot her.
Oakland city council president Nikki Fortunato Bas issued a statement condemning the shooting.
“I am outraged and sickened over the senseless, brutal slaying of an elderly AAPI woman in broad daylight this afternoon in Oakland’s Little Saigon,” Bas said, according to KTVU. “There was an attempted robbery in the middle of the afternoon, she was shot and killed.”
According to CBS News, police have not made any arrests or released any information about a possible suspect.
