Tyler Buchner got his first start as quarterback for the University of Notre Dame on Saturday in a game against Ohio State University. Buchner is half Asian and half white.
Notre Dame announced that the sophomore would be the team’s starting quarterback in August. Buchner appeared in ten games his freshman year, throwing three touchdowns and three interceptions.
Unfortunately for Buchner, his first start ended in a loss. The fifth-ranked Fighting Irish faced second-ranked Ohio State in Ohio for their opening game of the season.
Buchner started the game hot, completing eight out of eight passes for 128 yards. But a late comeback led by Ohio State’s quarterback CJ Stroud gave the Buckeyes the victory. Overall, Buchner completed 10 out of 17 passes for 177 yards. According to Sports Illustrated, he made several big throws throughout the game.
