Cambodia’s Supreme Court Friday denied bail to a Cambodian American accused of plotting against the government, reports Radio Free Asia.
The case against Theary Seng has been cited by rights group Licadho as one of 50 “prisoners of interest” unjustly imprisoned for their social activism, according to the Voice of America.
The Supreme Court decision essentially upheld a six-year prison sentence for Facebook posts that criticized Prime Minister Hun Sen and in support of opposition leader Sam Rainsy.
“I think it was unfair for my client,” Seng’s attorney Choung Chou Ngy said to the Phnom Penh Post.
An earlier ruling by a court of appeal also upheld the sentence.
Ngy said he would discuss the next move with is client.
“If the government doesn’t open up to accept democratic culture, it will be difficult to lead a country,” Ros Sotha, executive director of the Cambodian Human Rights Action Committee. Sotha accused the government for convicting Seng for simply expressing an opinion.
