Influential Korean illustrator dies suddenly

Acclaimed comic artist Kim Jung Gi has passed away at the age of 47.

CNN reports that he died suddenly this week in Paris. He experienced chest pains at the airport before he was about to board a plane to New York. Kim was taken to a nearby hospital for surgery, where he died.

The illustrator was born in the South Korean town of Goyang-si in 1975, The Los Angeles Times reports. He began drawing at a young age, eventually going on to study art and design at Dong-Eui University.

Kim has drawn animals, superheroes, mythical creatures, city skylines and battle scenes. The artist drew inspiration from his mandatory military service for some of his drawings. According to The Los Angeles Times, some of Kim’s early work was fairly erotic, an artistic choice that drew criticism from some.

Kim started his early career illustrating South Korean comics. CNN reports that he later became known for his live drawings. Recently, he did a live drawing for the soccer team Paris Saint-Germain F.C. at their stadium in Paris.
