Texas politicians failing to reach out to AAPI voters

As election season heats up in Texas, Asian American voters are voicing their disappointment with Texas politicians, saying they feel ignored.

According to the Texas Tribune, a recent report from Asian Texans for Justice found that 80 percent of AAPI Texans they surveyed said their interests “are not well represented in government.”

The Tribune also interviewed AAPI Texans who expressed frustration with the lack of outreach.

“Specific Asian outreach, I’ve seen little to none on either side,” Xin Huang, a prospective voter, told the Tribune. “I really hope we get more of a voice in American politics.”

Huang, who was frustrated with the Supreme Court’s recent Roe v. Wade decision, added that he would “crawl through broken glass to vote.”

AAPI voters are also criticizing the state for gerrymandering. A group of AAPI voters are actually suing the state of Texas, alleging that the state re-drew Congressional and state voting maps to create majority white voting districts.

Congressional district 22 almost elected an AAPI politician in 2020: Sri Preston Kulkarni. Re-districting has now divided the AAPI vote into three other districts.

“Congressional District 22 was really the only chance we would have had to send an Asian American to Congress,” said Nabila Mansoor, executive director of the progressive organization Rise AAPI, told Houston Public Media. “That has now been taken away.”
