Boyfriend charged in murder of missing girlfriend in Chicago

An Illinois man from Brighton Park near Chicago is being held without bail in the murder of his pregnant girlfriend and unborn child, reports CBS Chicago.

The family of Bilian Fang reported her missing on October 10. She worked in the restaurant owned by her boyfriend, Yaer Shen, 46.

According to NBC Chicago, Shen admitted killing Fang and then hiding his body after his arrest on Tuesday.

Prosecutors believe the two apparently had an argument over money in front of the house where Shen’s ex-wife and children lived.

Fang called her 14-year-old daughter on October 9 at least twice to arrange to have a friend pick up her mother at 36th Place and California Avenue, investigators said. That friend arrived but could not find Fang.

That’s when prosecutors say the daughter called Shen to ask about where her mother was. Shen then allegedly told Fang’s daughter she “could go if she wanted to.”

This is what prosecutors say happened next:

The two got into an argument in the car. Fang slapped Shen in the face. He then allegedly grabbed her neck and squeezed before letting her go as the argument continued. He then allegedly choked her again to the point she lost consciousness. Authorities say he attempted to revive her using CPR, but eventually dumped her body in a water reclamation area in Stickney.

ABC7 reports investigators used cell phone data to trace Shen and obtain video of him sitting in his car in the area near where they eventually found the body. Police say they found a note on Fang’s body signed by Shen that read “I am sorry. I am not a good person. I made you suffer. I got scammed. I know it is irresponsible for me to leave you. I hope we don’t meet in another life.”

Investigators say they also found a note at Shen’s home written to his ex-wife that said “that he had done very bad things, he wanted to kill himself, but couldn’t do it, and that he was going to turn himself in, but was afraid to go to prison.”

He’s due back in court on November 22 after being ordered held without bail on Thursday. He faces a life sentence if convicted.
