Candidate apologizes for anti-Muslim, anti-Sikh tweets

An Indian American Republican candidate has apologized for anti-Muslim and anti-Sikh tweets he published in 2020 and 2022.

Vibhuti Jha is running New York State 16th Assembly District in Nassau County against Democratic incumbent Gina Sillitti. According to Awaz the Voice, the Muslim community recently criticized Jha for a tweet he posted on February 16.

“Islam might consider fighting its own definition of who they are! That will help the rest of humanity!!” Jha tweeted.

Jha also posted a tweet claiming that Sikh immigrants seeking asylum were insincere.

“The “asylum” racket for U.S. immigration by Sikhs is real — it must be exposed. Those fake asylum seeks are “required to” stand and protest ANY thing against India!” he wrote, according to Awaz the Voice.

Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul and the Nassau Republican Party condemned Jha’s tweets, Newsday reports. Jha deleted the tweets and issued an explanation on Twitter. He said that he did not mean to hurt anyone and mentioned he had “very good” Muslim friends.
