Two AAPI candidates will not be contributing to a “red wave” this year. House of Representatives candidates Allan Fung (R-RI) and Hung Cao (R-VA) have failed to defeat the Democratic incumbents in their districts.
Fung was running to represent Rhode Island’s second Congressional district against Democratic incumbent Seth Magaziner. The New York times called the race for Magaziner who has 50.3 percent of the votes to Fung’s 47 percent.
Rhode Island is a comfortably Democratic state and a Democrat has held the 2nd district seat since 1991. However, there was some concern that Fung might be part of a red wave during the 2022 elections. Fung served as a the mayor of Cranston, the second most populous city in Rhode Island, for 12 years. According to POLITICO, Fung was ahead in the polls in the weeks leading up to the election.
Fung conceded on Tuesday night and congratulated Magaziner on his victory. According to The Providence Journal, he said that he would “continue to work in any capacity that I can to make our state better” during his concession speech.
In Virginia, Republican candidate Cao has lost to Democratic incumbent Jennifer Wexton. Wexton currently has won 53 percent of the votes in Virginia’s 10th district while Cao has won 47 percent of the votes. Cao is a retired Navy captain whose family came to America as Vietnam refugees. According to WLJA, both parties were keeping a close eye on the race.
