Texas is sending its first Muslim American representatives to the state legislature.
According to the Texas Tribune, Salman Bhojani and Suleman Lalani will be the first Muslim lawmakers to serve in the Texas State House of Representatives. Both newly elected lawmakers are members of the Democratic party.
Bhojani will represent District 92 in Tarrant County. According to his campaign website, Bhojani was born in Pakistan and immigrated to Texas when he was 17-years-old. He earned a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Texas at Dallas and a law degree from Southern Methodist University.
The 42-year-old father ran a campaign that promised to protect American democracy, increase access to healthcare, restore economic stability and protect civil rights.
Lalani will represent District 76 in Fort Bend County. He is a doctor who immigrated to the U.S. in the 1990s after being impressed with American medical innovations. Now, he wants to bring compassion back to the healthcare system. Like Bhojani, he hopes to improve access to healthcare by increasing the number of people who have health insurance.
