Sandra Oh has signed onto HBO’s adaptation of “The Sympathizer.” The series is based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s novel of the same name.
According to Deadline, Oh, Kieu Chinh (Dynasty) and Nguyen Cao Ky Duyen (Paris By Night) have joined the cast. The show is being produced by Robert Downey Jr., who is also a cast member.
“The Sympathizer” centers around a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy who flees to America during the end of the Vietnam War. The story follows the unnamed spy as he adjusts to his exile in America.
Variety reports that Oh will star as Ms. Sofia Mori who is beginning to grapple with her complex Asian American identity. Chinh will play the Major’s homesick mother and Duyen plays Madame, General Le’s elegant wife.
HBO ordered the creation of the series in July 2021, according to The Hollywood Reporter. A24 will serve as the studio. It is unclear when production will begin or when the series will be released.
