Oscar-winning director Ang Lee casts son in Bruce Lee biopic

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Brokeback Mountain director Ang Lee has signed on to direct a Bruce Lee biopic, Deadline reports.

The film simply titled Bruce Lee will be from Sony’s 3000 Pictures and will star the director’s son, Mason Lee, as the martial artist star.

Bruce’s daughter, Shannon Lee, will produce the film along with Ang Lee, Lawrence Grey, Ben Everard and Brian Bell.

“’Bruce Lee’ is a longtime passion project for Ang and a deeply emotional story depicting the triumphs and conflicts of one of the foremost real-life action heroes of our time,” Gabler said to Variety. “All of us at Sony and 3000 Pictures are proud to help Ang and his filmmaking team create what we believe will be an extraordinary theatrical event.”

Lee gained prominence in America playing Kato in TV’s The Green Hornet as well as the Warner Bros hit Enter the Dragon. He died suddenly at the age of 32.

Mason Lee previously appeared in Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk and The Hangover Part II. According to Deadline, he has been preparing for the role of Bruce Lee for three years during the lockdown in Asia. He received nominations for Best Supporting Actor from the Golden Horse Awards for the Taiwanese film Stand by Me and the Hong Kong film Who Killed Cock Robin.

“Accepted as neither fully American nor fully Chinese, Bruce Lee was a bridge between East and West who introduced Chinese Kung Fu to the world, a scientist of combat and an iconic performing artist who revolutionized both the martial arts and action cinema,” Ang Lee told Deadline. “I feel compelled to tell the story of this brilliant, unique human being who yearned for belonging, possessed tremendous power in a 135-pound-frame, and who, through tireless hard work, made impossible dreams into reality.”
